The Role and the Organisation:

Our client is one of the world's leading wholesale banks, with more than a decade’s operation in Australia. This is a critical role managing all legal matters across the branches in Australia including Banking & Finance, general commercial and regulatory matters. This role will collaborate with the senior management team and business leaders from all business lines and provide sound legal advice.


Responsibilities:

  • Act as the 1IC and centre point of contact for all corporate legal services, managing one junior counsel.
  • Provision of legal advice and services, including:
    • Design, implement and manage Branch Legal policy and procedures;
    • Design and implement standard processes and forms for requesting legal advice and services;
    • Maintain precedent library and register of advice and services provided;
    • Internal legal reporting and management reporting;
    • Legal case management;
    • Legal issues escalation and resolution.
    • Monitor legislative changes and broadcast as required.
  • External legal liaison, including:
    • Manage protocols on the engagement of external lawyers;
    • Manage and make recommendations on the Branch’s external Legal Panel;
    • Review advice and services provided by external lawyers and act accordingly.
  • Monitor and report on the level of legal compliance and effectiveness of those internal controls.
  • Manage all legal and statutory notices received by the Branch.
  • Provide legal advice on new products, services and special projects.
  • Provide legal advice on transactions / deals on a limited basis.
  • Draft, review and maintain standard documentations and general agreements for the Branch.
  • Provide litigation and insurance support.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • • 8+ years of PQE experience preferably in Banking & Financial Services.
  • • Tertiary qualifications in Legal and a current Australian Practicing Certificate (unrestricted)is essential.
  • • Experience in drafting, advising and negotiating various types of banking & general commercial contracts is essential.
  • • Experience as a lawyer in private practice and/or financial institution advising on banking and finance matters in Australia is essential, with a preference for wholesale corporate and institutional lending experience.
  • • Sound working knowledge in legal and regulatory requirements applicable to foreign ADIs is essential.
  • • Ability to balance business needs with the provision of legal advice.
  • • Chinese (Mandarin) language skill is advantageous.
