Travel Offset Calculator

The purpose of a carbon calculator in a tourism operator’s or destination site is twofold:

• To create awareness of the carbon cost associated with visitor travel to British Columbia
• To encourage the visitor/traveller to offset that cost in some practical way without causing them to postpone their trip entirely

This online tool, designed specifically for ETHOS, is a travelers carbon emissions calculator for application on websites of ETHOS network member businesses across BC. The calculator features air travel and ground transportation choices associated with travel to and from BC destinations. Visitors or travellers can easily calculate and offset their own carbon emissions. The calculator and tracking database is delivered as a website embeddable flash module. This means that each ETHOS network member can integrate the calculator, with their own location as the default destination, on their own organization's website.

ETHOS commissioned Vancouver-based Passion for Action to develop the ETHOS Travel Offset Calculator and back end reporting system. The calculator utilizes the travel emissions data and calculation algorithms developed by InterVISTAS, a Vancouver based Consulting firm that has extensive experience in natural resource and environmental projects, climate change issues and greenhouse gas accounting and management, emissions calculators, and carbon offsetting programs.

The calculator provides a meaningful, but manageable, step towards carbon stewardship in BC’s tourism sector.

 In addition to calculating a visitor’s or guest’s carbon footprint based on their itinerary, the calculator also offers an opportunity for the traveller to either purchase a carbon offset from Pacific Carbon Trust’s portfolio of projects, or by donating to leading British Columbia sustainability projects.
